Farrell: Hanley Ramirez's Status 'Encouraging,' But Still Day-To-Day

BOSTON (CBS) -- The one member of the lineup whom the Red Sox could not afford to lose is Hanley Ramirez, yet that's exactly who left Monday night's game due to a shoulder injury sustained from crashing into the wall in foul ground.

The concern around Boston is obvious, but manager John Farrell offered a slightly positive update on Ramirez's condition on Tuesday.

"I think it was encouraging that he came in today with some increased mobility," Farrell said of Ramirez. "He's still a little sore, obviously, but maybe a little bit better than we anticipated coming in."

Despite the positive sign, the Red Sox still don't have a clear picture of when Ramirez might be able to return to the field.

"He's dealing with a mild sprain of the left shoulder," Farrell explained. "He's shown improvement in his range of motion today. He still is day-to-day, and we should know more in the next two or three days on his status going forward."

As for whether the team will feel the need to place Ramirez on the 15-day disabled list, Farrell said that the ultimate decision has not yet been made. The manager noted that the team typically makes that decision roughly seven days after the injury is sustained.

"Hopefully we would have much more clear information before the seven days arrive, but that's usually been our marker of when to put a guy on the DL or not," Farrell said.

Ramirez is hitting .283 with 10 home runs in 25 games played this season.
