Teen Riding Bike Shot In Front Of Mattapan Church

BOSTON (CBS) – A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized Tuesday night after he was shot in the chest in Mattapan.

The boy was riding his bike on River Street when he was shot in front of a church.

A neighbor, who did not want to be identified, saw the boy right after he was shot. She says he was bleeding and holding his left side. "Walking by he was bending, he was in pain," the woman said.

A short time later, more shots were fired and a car that was riddled with bullet holes was stopped by police.

"For this shooting to happen is just a no-no, it's not acceptable," said Mattapan resident Augustine Onochie. "Not in this neighborhood." Onochie said he has been living in the neighborhood for 17 years and has never seen an incident like this.

"We're concerned for him and how he's doing," said Nola Bentley. "It's very unfortunate, and as a neighborhood it's just one of those things we have to tackle and see what we can do to prevent it from happening."

Police say the boy was shot once, and is at Boston Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. No arrests have been made.
