Shockwaves From Nepal Earthquake Still Felt In New England

BOSTON (CBS) - Concord native Jim Davidson called WBZ from Mount Everest. He was standing on a glacier as he spoke. "All of us are off the mountain now, which is good, and what I see is hundreds of tents. Probably about a third of them have been destroyed by the avalanche that came rolling down on the base camp, and there are lots of teams slowly trying to pull themselves together getting ready to start evacuating," he said.

In Pittsfield, the father of a woman hiking in the region was ecstatic to get a text from her saying, "Hi. We are OK." She was about halfway through a trek with her husband, when the earthquake hit. "They don't want to go back into Kathmandu and retrieve their gear because that adds to the relief load of needing food, needing water, needing shelter. So they're probably going to shelter in place for a couple of days," he said.

At a Hindu temple in Boston, prayers went out for those in need. Activists are planning a vigil at 3:00pm Wednesday in Harvard Square. They also plan to collect donations to send the earthquake-affected area. "The big cities, aid is coming," said Amit Dixit, who heads the South Asian Arts Council. "But there are rural villages, other places, that are absolutely decimated."
