'Do Not Knock' Registry Proposed In Haverhill

HAVERHILL (CBS) -- Massachusetts has a "Do Not Call" list, but one community is considering doing the same for door-to-door solicitations.

Haverhill's city council will vote Tuesday on a proposal to create a "Do Not Knock" registry for residents, a city councilor tells WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

A salesperson who violates the ordinance could be hit with a $300 fine and lose any police-issued license.

City Councilor Colin LePage says there was a steep increase in unwanted door-to-door sales pitches last year for services including solar panel installation, home security, cable, windows and roofs.

"There was just a big boom of folks coming for different things," he said. "We were getting more and more complaints from residents."

The proposal is similar to an ordinance in Methuen. Boy and Girl Scouts, political candidates, religious groups and charities would be exempt from the new rules.

"It's all just for business," LePage said.
