Keller @ Large: We Want Detailed Boston 2024 Olympics Plan

BOSTON (CBS) - You see it almost every week in the personal advice columns, one partner in a couple wants to get married and keeps trying to get a straight answer out of the other as to whether or not that's part of their plan, too. But they never give one, and it's killing the relationship.

So far, the group that wants to bring the 2024 Summer Olympics to Boston has depicted themselves as the spurned suitor in their dysfunctional courtship of the public.

But actually, it's the other way around.

On Wednesday, Boston 2024 trumpeted the addition of iconic Boston athletes like Larry Bird and David Ortiz to their board of directors, the equivalent of the guy buying his girlfriend a charm bracelet as a peace offering. But we want an engagement ring, or in this case, some straight answers to a simple question – how much is this going to cost us?

A new poll from Suffolk University finds only 43-percent of the public backs the currently-vague Boston bid. But support jumps to 56-percent with a guarantee that no public money will be needed to run the Games.

Yet here we are, nearly four months after we won the US bid and nearly two years after the organizers started talking about it, and there still are no firm answers to the core questions of who, what, where, when and how much.

No wonder suspicion and resistance are filling the vacuum. Gov. Baker put it succinctly Wednesday: "what the public is looking for...is a detailed plan."

Not bold-faced names.

Not a bunch of stagecraft and spin.

Details.

A plan.

A ring, and a wedding date.

You've had plenty of time, Olympic Lotharios.

Now it's time to put up, or shut up.
