Brookline Police Officer Helps Deliver Baby After Traffic Stop

BROOKLINE (CBS) – A couple that was pulled over for a traffic violation on the way to the hospital eventually delivered their baby girl roadside thanks to the help of a Brookline police officer.

Officer Rafaela Carlisle-Swedberg pulled over a van for running a red light Thursday on Chestnut Hill Ave. in Brookline.

When Carlisle-Swedberg discovered a woman inside the van was in labor, she decided to let them continue on to the hospital.

The Brookline officer instinctively followed the van, and when it pulled over on the side of Route 9 a short time later, she again approached the vehicle.

"I was talking to the husband and all of the sudden (the woman) said 'The baby's here. Someone has to catch the baby,'" Carlisle-Swedberg recalled.

Carlisle-Swedberg successfully helped the couple give birth roadside, and they were then transported to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston with their new baby girl.

"They were just really happy," said Carlisle-Swedberg. "A lot of smiles and tears."
