Race In The Rain

HRRR9amBOSTON (CBS) – It's all about the timing. A week ago, the timing revealed that yesterday's weather should have occurred today. In other words, the systems accelerated a bit so a protective ridge of high pressure moved out more quickly. That became more apparent last Wednesday so the forecasts took on a more negative tone but there was still some hope that much of the rain would hold off until mid-afternoon. Rain arrival time had to be quickened on my forecast delivered Saturday and indeed that seems to be taking place this morning.

This Morning:

Now with the event about to begin soon, we can see the rain moving in this morning as some drizzle and showers by 9 o'clock in Hopkinton as this high resolution map depicts.

The intensity of the rain will vary through the day ranging from light to moderate with perhaps a few spells of heavier rain. I am not expecting tropical gully-washer torrential downpours but you must prep for getting wet. The wind will freshen straight out of the east with speeds up to 10-25 mph by late morning with potential rainfall of at least 0.10" by noon. Temperatures may hold steady or slightly rise from the lower 40s to middle 40s by noon.

Afternoon:

The easterly wind will be generally a head wind across most of the race course and it will increase to 15-35 mph during the afternoon. Temperatures should hold steady or rise very slightly in the middle to upper 40s by later in the afternoon. By 4pm, I expect an average of about 0.4" of rain.

Evening:

By 8pm, much of the region will have received at least 0.75" of rain with more to fall through midnight. Temperatures may rise a bit near or past 50 degrees during the evening as the rain tapers off to showers later in the evening. The wind will become more southeasterly over southeastern MA.

Crossing that finish line at any time is a huge accomplishment, so good luck to all the runners! Be safe! You can watch the big race on WBZ-TV.
