Pro-Marijuana Group Submits First Draft Of Ballot Question

BOSTON (AP) — A group hoping to legalize the recreational use of marijuana in Massachusetts has submitted an initial draft of a proposed ballot question to the state attorney general's office.

Bay State Repeal said the question would allow adults 21 or older to purchase the drug from licensed sellers while also taking steps to ban sales to minors.

Submitting the question for initial review is the first step on a long process of getting the question on the 2016 ballot.

Attorney General Maura Healey said her office will give the question a preliminary review. It's up to the attorney general's office to decide whether the final version of any question passes constitutional muster.

Healey told reporters Friday that her personal opposition to legalizing marijuana will have no influence on the review process.
