Officials Call 2015 Boston Marathon Route A 'No Drone Zone'

BOSTON (CBS) -- This year's Marathon Day rules sound much the same as last year: no backpacks, no coolers, and no face-covering costumes.

But marathon officials also asked the public Monday not to fly drones near the 26-mile route.

"We don't want to make this oppressive," State Police Col. Timothy Alben said. "We just want to make sure everyone is safe."

The public safety plan includes components that will be visible to and hidden from the public.

More than 3500 uniformed local, state law enforcement members as well as military service members will be along the route. These members will be "interactive" with the public, officials said.

Marathon-goers can expect to see periodic security checkpoints along the route. Spectators were also asked to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

"The very best partner we have in this is the public," said Alben. "If you see something, then text a tip, or call 911."

30,000 runners are expected to participate in this year's marathon.
