Braintree Student Arrested For Allegedly Bringing Loaded Gun To School

BRAINTREE (CBS) – A 14-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly bringing a loaded gun to a Braintree school on Wednesday morning.

Police say another student alerted officers after the boy bragged about bringing the gun to the St. Francis of Assisi School.

"I applaud the actions of the student in bringing this to our attention," Braintree Police Chief Russell Jenkins said. "If you 'see something, say something' never rang more true."

Police found the loaded 9mm handgun in the boy's locker. He is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and other related offenses.

"Our investigation is ongoing," Chief Jenkins said, "but it would appear that this was an isolated matter and there are no indications that any other students are involved."

The boy has not been identified because he is a juvenile. He is being held without bail until his hearing Thursday morning.

Saint Francis of Assisi School is a Catholic elementary school that has students in grades Pre K-8.

In a letter to parents, school officials said they understand the "shock and concern this incident raises" in the community.

Officials encouraged parents to talk about the incident with their children.

"We share with you a universal commitment to providing our students, faculty and staff with a safe school environment," the school said. "When an incident of this nature occurs we owe it to you and ourselves to get to the bottom of what and why this happened. We are confident we will."
