Daily Talker: School On Good Friday

It's no April fool's joke. Parents in Cranston, Rhode Island may be left scrambling to find backup care for their children this Friday. The district could be forced to cancel classes because they won't have enough teachers.

The reason?

More than 200 hundred teachers have requested the day off to observe Good Friday. Earlier this month the teachers filed a lawsuit because their original requests to have Good Friday off were denied. The teacher's contracts allow them to take two days off for religious reasons each year. This fall teachers were allowed to take off two Jewish holidays, and last week a judge ordered that the teachers could have Good Friday off as long as they submitted a request by today, April 1st.

On its website the school district alerted parents to the issue and says it may not know until early Friday morning if school will be closed. Students who miss the day for religious reasons will get an excused absence.

What do you think? Should school be closed on Good Friday?
