Bomb Squad Detonates Cannonball Found At Castle Island

BOSTON (CBS/AP) - Massachusetts State Police say a cannonball found by a fisherman at Castle Island was detonated Thursday morning.

A State Police bomb squad detonated the cannonball after speaking with the U.S. Navy.

The rusty, pitted cannonball may have dated to the Civil War-era. The cannonball was about 12 inches and had some unidentified black material inside.

The detonation happened at about 11:45 a.m. at Carson Beach. The detonation site was cleared by 11:58 a.m.

"(It) does not appear to have been (a) solid cast cannonball," police tweeted. "Debris suggests it was filled with some type of material."

By 12:08 p.m., air and road restrictions at Carson Beach were lifted.
