Historic Winter May Impact Local Farms

SUDBURY (CBS) - This historic winter may have an affect on local farms and their crops.

At Siena Farms, owner Chris Kurth says he isn't exactly sure how delayed the harvest season may be.

"We just don't know yet. We're taking it literally day by day," Kurth says. "Everything could be delayed by a couple of weeks."

With several inches of snow still on his fields, Kurth is trying something he's never had to try.

"We're watching carefully and we're trying to balance patience and accepting what the weather throws our way with an alternate strategy of taking matters into our own hands," says Kurth.

Kurth added a greenhouse, will likely remove the snow from the fields and may even try using a 'flame weeder' to melt the snow.

Siena Farms is a 75 acre farm that organically grows for its community, farmers' markets and a dozen Boston area restaurants, including Oleana in Cambridge.

"(It's) Just a quality issue. For us at Siena Farms everything that comes in is so beautiful I hate when I have to get it from somewhere else and the quality is just a quarter," says chef Cara Chigazola.

Kurth says he'd normally be planting seedlings and plowing his fields by April 1st.
