Coast Guard Rescues Fishermen From Sinking Boat In Rhode Island

NEWPORT, Rhode Island (CBS) - Coast Guard crews rescued two fishermen from a sinking fishing boat called "More Misery" Monday off the coast of Newport, Rhode Island.

The fisherman called the Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England watchstanders at Woods Hole, Massachusetts to say their 38-foot boat was taking on water and needed help.

Two 45-foot rescue boats and a Jayhawk helicopter were called to the scene.

The Station Castle Hill crew brought the fishermen safely aboard.

Crews also began dewatering the boat and towed it to Newport.

"This case highlights the importance of having the right safety equipment on board," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Timothy Chan, a watchstander at Sector Southeastern New England's command center, in a statement on the Coast Guard website.

The fishermen were prepared with a raft, immersion suits, flares, and an emergency position indicating radio beacon, in case they needed to abandon ship.
