Authorities: Saugus Man Was 'Person Of Interest' In Cambridge Police Officer Shooting

BOSTON (CBS) - Authorities say a Saugus man had several active warrants and was a "person of interest" in a shooting with a Cambridge police officer before he shot and killed himself at a New Hampshire inn Friday night.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced Saturday that Nicholas Cammarata, 30, had warrants in Middlesex County that were issued on March 12.

He was in violation of a condition of bail which was ordered in a pending criminal case. In that case, Cammarata had been arraigned on charges of assault to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and two counts of carrying a dangerous weapon.

Cammarata has been identified by Cambridge police as the man found dead at an America's Best Inn in Portsmouth.

SWAT teams and Portsmouth police evacuated the motel, shut down roads in the area as a precaution and sent out a "code red" to nearby residents to shelter in place. Shortly after trying to escape, police heard a gunshot nearby and moments later found Cammarata dead.

"Working with our law enforcement partners, we will be assessing forensic results, ballistics information, and interviewing individuals before any conclusions are made concerning the circumstances which occurred on March 20," Ryan said in a statement.

The district attorney says Cambridge police consider Cammarata "a person of interest" in connection with an incident Friday involving a breaking and entering in progress report in the area of Fifth and Gore streets which then led to a shooting involving a suspect and a police officer.

The officer was not hurt.

The Cambridge and Portsmouth incidents remain under investigation.
