'You Can Smell Like Marijuana All You Want,' But School Cafeteria Worker Fired
LEOMINSTER (CBS) -- It may not be illegal to smell like marijuana, but the scent has cost a high school cafeteria worker his job.
A worker at Leominster High School was removed after coworkers complained that he smelled like pot.
Police were notified of the complaints, but there's not much they can do about someone reeking of weed.
"You can smell like marijuana all you want," Lt. Michael Goldman told The Sentinel & Enterprise. "We can't do anything about it."
Goldman told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 that two school resource officers confronted the employee and he surrendered a baggie containing less than an ounce of marijuana.
Possessing less than one ounce of marijuana has been decriminalized in Massachusetts.
"They could have chosen to write him a civil fine for it, which they didn't do," Goldman told WBZ NewsRadio 1030. "I suspect the officers didn't do it because they knew he was going to be out of a job."
Chartwells School Dining Services, which employs the worker and provides food to the school, told the newspaper it's investigating the incident.
