Driver Confronts Webster Police Officer For Parking In Alleged Handicapped Spot

WEBSTER (CBS) -- Webster Police have responded to an allegation that one of its officers illegally parked in a handicapped spot and inappropriately responded to the driver after being confronted by him.

The incident, captured on a cell phone camera by the driver, shows the driver informing the police officer that he was illegally parked in a handicapped spot.

"Do you know what you're talking about?" the officer responded. "This isn't a handicapped spot, okay?"

"That's not a handicapped spot. I'm a marked police unit," the officer later says.

"So you get to park wherever you want?" the driver says.

"That's right," the officer responds.

According to Webster Police, the video prompted a barrage of phone calls and social media posts saying their officers think they are above the law.

"I will admit the cruiser is parked crooked in the parking spot, but I hardly think that is worthy of all this attention to include people wishing we were dead,"  the department posted on Facebook Monday.

Webster Police confirmed Monday that, despite faded painting of a handicapped sign on the spot, it is not a designated handicapped spot.

"In Massachusetts a handicapped parking spot needs to be posted with signage that designated that parking spot a designated handicapped parking spot," Webster Police posted.

According to Webster police, the incident occurred months ago but was posted on YouTube on Monday, sparking public interest.
