Keolis To Add 42 Commuter Rail Trains On Monday
BOSTON (CBS) - Keolis says it will add 42 commuter rail trains Monday in another step toward the planned restoration of full service by the end of March.
The operator of the MBTA's commuter rail system has restored 82 percent of the normal train fleet back into service after a winter of constant breakdowns and delays.
On Monday, about 75 percent of regular weekday schedule will be restored, an 11 percent increase over last week.
According to Keolis' plan, commuter rail should be operating at 85 percent capacity on Monday. By March 23, service is expected to be at 92 percent before being fully operational by March 30.
"These routes were selected based on where we knew we could provide quality service on a consistent basis in order to have the greatest impact on the overall commuter rail schedule," said Keolis Commuter Services General Manager Gerald Francis in a press statement. "We also took into account input from passengers about where there was the greatest need."
It was announced Wednesday that the MBTA would offer a day of free rides on April 24, and there are plans for a 15 percent discount on purchases of monthly MBTA passes during the month of May.

The MBTA fined Keolis more than $434,000 after nearly two-third of trains were late or canceled during a period of extreme snow and cold for the region in February.
Keolis recently apologized to customers in a full-page ad in The Boston Globe.
