Swans Grounded By Cold In Massachusetts
BOSTON (CBS) -- The extreme cold in Massachusetts this winter has proven unfit for man or beast.
Danvers police report that swans are making themselves at home in parking lots around town, plopping down near a Best Buy and Target, and the Endicott Plaza.
"Due to the extreme cold, the water sources where the swans would normally live are frozen," police wrote on Facebook. "It is also too cold for them to fly."
Boston has seen 44 straight days of temperatures below 40 degrees, and February was the second-coldest month ever recorded in the city.
Animal control has been making daily checks on the swans, but they don't seem to be in any distress, according to police.
Police said swans are a protected species, making it illegal to interfere with or relocate them.
Animal experts are also asking that no one feed the swans because it's harmful to their health.
