Report: Jets Owner Woody Johnson 'Serious' About Signing Darrelle Revis

BOSTON (CBS) -- Seeing Darrelle Revis win a Super Bowl for the rival New England Patriots was not an easy sight for Woody Johnson, and the Jets owner is apparently looking to make immediate amends.

According to the New York Daily News, Johnson "has been involved in serious internal discussions with Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan to make a push for perennial All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis if/when he becomes a free agent next week."

The Jets drafted Revis with the 14th overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft, and he spent six seasons in New York before being traded to Tampa Bay in 2013.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday that Revis was just about certain to become a free agent. The Patriots could choose to exercise an option for Revis to be under contract in 2015, but doing so would carry a prohibitive $25 million cap hit.

"This all comes down to whatever Darrelle Revis wants to do," Schefter said on ESPN Radio. "He's got a Super Bowl ring, his career has been validated, he's got one more big score left -- big score in terms of big contracts. So does he want to take that big contract with a team like the New York Jets, who are dying to make a run at Darrelle Revis? Or the Buffalo Bills [with former head coach Rex Ryan]? Or is he willing to take less to go back and play with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick and be in the environment he's been in in New England? And that's a call that only he can make."

Revis has never been one to leave dollars on the table at any point in his career, as he was a training camp holdout as often as he showed up on time. With Richard Sherman and Patrick Peterson cashing in with big-money deals, it might be hard for Revis to say no to whoever the highest bidder may be.

Of course, the Patriots rarely are the highest bidder with any player, so if the Patriots do hope to keep him for another year, it's going to be costly. Letting him walk could mean seeing Revis back in a Jets uniform come September.

It was just a month-and-a-half ago when the Patriots filed formal tampering charges against the Jets, after Johnson publicly stated, "I'd love for Darrelle to come back."

Clearly, Revis figures to be a much-sought-after man this spring and summer, as owners and GMs are willing to fight over him. Where he wants to continue his career is solely up to him.
