Boy Struck By Taxi Cab In Quincy

QUINCY (CBS) – A 12-year-old boy suffered serious injuries when he was hit by a taxi cab in Quincy Monday afternoon.

The boy was walking home from school on Berlin Street when he was struck at about 3:00 p.m. Witnesses say the boy was walking in the street with two friends because the sidewalks are covered with snow.

Police say the boy has severe head and facial injuries from the accident and was transported to Boston Medical Center.

He is currently listed in serious but stable condition.

The cab driver's girlfriend says he told her the snowy conditions were a factor.

"All I know is I got a phone call to come down and pick him up, he accidentally hit somebody and he's very, very, upset about it," Shirley Spano said. "I mean you can see the snowbanks down here, I mean you can't see anybody's driveway, you can't see anything."

Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch says residents are not required to shovel the sidewalks.

"Mathematically there's just nowhere to push the snow," Mayor Thomas Koch said. "There's no city ordinance requiring residential folks to clear sidewalks. It's certainly encouraged."

No charges have been filed.
