Worcester Company 'Raking' In The Cash After Snowstorms

WORCESTER (CBS) - With all the worries about so many inches of snow weighing down roofs, and the problem of ice dams, a lot of people are searching for roof rakes, but they're coming up empty. That's because most places are sold out. Well we found a company in Worcester that has some, because they make them themselves.

Welcome to Miller Fence in Worcester. It doesn't get any more "made in Massachusetts" than this. They've been building fences at Miller since 1967 and making roof rakes by hand for the last five winters.

"The demand has been great ever since roofs started collapsing," says owner Joe Miller. "It enables us to bring back our workers to manufacture the roof rakes," he adds.

That's because this is a slow time for fence work, so they've turned to manufacturing roof rakes with materials they ordinarily use for fences. And it's filling a big need.

"People from Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut are coming to purchase them," says Miller.

That's because at most stores, the shelves are empty. "I called Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, local hardware stores...no one had them," says Dan Generelli, who found Miller Fence online and ordered a rake. "When I called them they said they'd have it in an hour, and here I am to pick it up," says Generelli.

The cost is $40 for a ten and a half footer, and $60 for a twenty-one footer. Tomorrow, 17 workers will try to keep up with the demand.

"C'mon down and keep us busy," says Miller. Actually rather than going there, if you're interested you should call them and place an order.
