Police Seek Help In Carver Crash That Killed Pregnant Woman's Unborn Baby

CARVER (CBS) - Investigators are looking for help after a crash Sunday that killed a pregnant woman's unborn baby and injured her and her boyfriend.

Carver police were called to South Main Street about 4:45 p.m. Feb. 1 on a report of a head-on collision.

A grey 2008 Toyota Scion heading north on South Main Street crossed over the center line into the opposite travel lane, nearly striking one vehicle before crashing into the victim's blue 2005 Chevy Impala as it traveled south, police say.

The Impala was knocked off the road and into a snowbank on the southbound side of the road.

The operator, a 21-year-old pregnant woman from Buzzard's Bay, was trapped in the vehicle, police say.

Carver fire responded and used the Jaws of Life to free the woman.

She was taken to Tufts Medical where she learned that her 5-month-old unborn baby had died as a result of the crash, investigators say.

Her passenger, a 22-year-old Plympton man, got out of the car on his own.

He was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth.

A 23-year-old Carver man who was driving the Scion was also taken to Beth Israel.

He received a citation after the crash, Carver police said.

The Scion didn't attempt to avoid the Impala and didn't appear to apply the brakes, driving straight into the Impala, according to a press statement from the Plymouth County District Attorney's office.

Police say they want to speak with an operator of a blue vehicle which was traveling southbound in front of the victim's vehicle just before to the crash.

Witnesses can call State Police Trooper Kevin McDermott at 508-468-9073.
