MBTA Warns Cold Weather Could Cause More Delays

BOSTON (CBS) - Commuters in a hurry have not been able to hurry this week. "A fifty minute commute has become a two and a half hour commute," said Athik Pramanik heading home at the Red Line's JFK/UMass stop.

Delays and more delays thanks to the snow and cold, and just getting colder for MBTA riders. "I feel like I'm traveling four hours a day," said one commuter. "It's ridiculous and everyone is late for work."

It's been a scene of frustration all week for commuters as snow pounded the area. Now the MBTA is warning subzero temperatures Friday morning could hamper some of the lines again with aging equipment being put to the test.

"While the MBTA will work hard to provide regular weekday service, customers are strongly encouraged to stay updated on delays and service interruptions via MBTA.com or on twitter @mbta," according to a statement.

Shuttle buses will also be used on some lines this weekend, so crews can continue to clear snow from tracks in anticipation of more snow. Ashmont branch Red Line trains between JFK/UMass and Ashmont as well as Orange Line trains between Oak Grove and Sullivan will be replaced with shuttle buses Saturday, February 7.

Braintree branch Red Line trains between JFK/UMass and Braintree will be replaced with shuttle buses on Sunday, February 8. According to the MBTA, the Transit Authority in New York City is loaning two jet-powered snow blowers to help clear snow.
