There have been more than 700 cases of the flu since the start of the flu season last October, according to the Boston Public Health Commission.

January saw the highest number of flu cases compared to previous months.

Twenty-three percent of flu cases so far resulted in a visit to the hospital and four people have died from flu-related complications, the agency reported.

Influenza A (H3N2) was the strain found in a majority of the cases.

The most serious cases were documented in the South End, Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan, and Hyde Park.

Health officials reminded residents Tuesday to follow basic hygiene procedures such as washing hand and covering coughs to prevent the virus from spreading.
