All Things Travel: Record Year At Logan Airport
BOSTON (CBS) – It was another record year for passenger traffic at Logan Airport in 2014.
Figures released by The Massachusetts Port Authority, that runs the Boston airport, showed that total passenger traffic grew by 1,415,814 in 2014 to a total of 31,634,445. That was an increase of 4.7 percent.
Domestic traffic increased by 3.8 percent and international travelers by 9.8 percent for 2014.
With new service to China starting last summer, Trans-Pacific traffic jumped to almost 171,000 passengers, which accounted for an increase of about 64 percent.
International airline growth at Logan Airport will continue this year with three new carriers scheduled to begin flights from Logan Airport. They are Cathay Pacific Air Lines, El Al and Aero Mexico.
JetBlue continues to be the number one U.S. based airline at the Boston airport. Their passenger count was 8,419,209. Last year Delta ranked second with 4,531,886.
The airline to watch toward the end of the year will be the final parts of the merger of U.S. Airways into American Airlines in the fourth quarter. That combined figure in Boston last year of 7,065,118 would place them second in total passenger numbers.
Both American and JetBlue have just over 100 daily flights leaving Logan.
Air Trans and Southwest completed their merger in December. There combined numbers were 2,524,117 ranking them fifth behind United.
The all other category numbers were 3,214,156 and included Alaska Airlines, Sun Coast, Spirit and Virgin America.
A major terminal change at Logan is scheduled this spring when Southwest moves to Terminal A from Terminal E; and Alaska and Sun Country move from A to C. Massport is currently in the design phase of an expansion of the international terminal and JetBlue is upgrading facilities in Terminal C.
