Power Shut Off To Scituate Homes Ahead Of Blizzard

SCITUATE (CBS) – The blizzard approaching Massachusetts is forcing the Scituate Fire Department to take serious action.

National Grid cut power to 200 coastal homes as a precaution, because if there were a fire, crews would not be able to reach them.

The town says the decision was made in part due to fires in December 2010 which were caused by the inability to shut power off after a house fire had started and an arcing wire jumped to an adjacent home. Two homes were lost as a result.

The power was cut off to homes on Rebecca Rd, Lighthouse Rd., Turner Rd., Oceanside Dr., and Surfside Rd. at 10 p.m. and will remain off until the end of the storm.

Residents were alerted of the planned outage by a reverse 911 call.

A shelter is set up at Scituate High School.
