Seahawks CB Jeremy Lane: Rob Gronkowski Is Not That Good

BOSTON (CBS) -- Getting tired of all this talk about deflated footballs? Well, try a little bit of old-fashioned bulletin-board material on for size.

When most footballs fans think of the Seattle secondary, they think of Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor or Byron Maxwell. They don't typically think of Jeremy Lane.

But much like Freddie Mitchell in Super Bowl XXXIX, the 24-year-old Lane is thrusting himself into the spotlight. And he's doing so with some trash talk.

Here's what Lane had to say about Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski: "I actually don't think he's that good."

The quote comes from ESPN.com, and it didn't stop there.

"He's OK. He does have a big body," Lane said. "But from what I've seen on tape, he doesn't like you putting your hands on him. So if we put our hands on him and shake him up a little bit, he won't catch that many balls."

Gronkowski has 10 catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns in two playoff games this year. In his career (regular and postseason combined), he's caught 339 passes for 4,838 yards and 59 touchdowns in 71 games played.

Lane, in 42 career games (regular and postseason combined), has made zero interceptions.

Yet 10 days before the Super Bowl, there he is in a headline.

Lane also told ESPN.com in a not-so-subtle way that the Patriots might try some tricks next Sunday.

"I'm good no matter who's lined up there, but [the Patriots] try to do things like line a bunch of ineligible guys out there to get you confused," Lane said. "We have a plan for it."

Mitchell, you might remember, caught just one pass for 11 yards in the Eagles' Super Bowl loss to the Patriots. We'll see if Lane can fare better in Super Bowl XLIX.
