Freezing Rain Glazes Mass. Highways

BOSTON (CBS/AP) — Freezing rain and drizzle has glazed roads in parts of southwestern Connecticut and western Massachusetts, causing numerous accidents and temporary road closures.

Officials are advising people to stay off the roads in those areas Sunday morning until temperatures warm later in the day, and precipitation turns to rain. Problems have been reported on Interstates 95, 91 and 84 in Connecticut and on the Massachusetts Turnpike.

The speed limit on the Mass Pike was reduced to 40 mph at 11 a.m. from the New York border to Interchange 11.

Massachusetts State Police said that on Route 23 in Blanford, a road by the animal hospital was closed due to a wire down after a car crashed on icy roads.

The National Weather Service issued a freezing rain advisory in effect until 11 a.m. for southwestern Connecticut, and until noon for interior areas of southern New England including much of Connecticut, northern Rhode Island, and central and western Massachusetts.

Temperatures in the 40s with rain are expected later Sunday, including the evening AFC Championship game at Foxborough, Massachusetts, between the Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots.
