Mass. Schools Rated Nation's Best In Recent Report

BOSTON (CBS) – A recent study shows the United States education system is in need of improvement, but four New England states ranked in the top 10.

24/7 Wall St., a USA Today content partner, gave the U.S. a grade of "C" based on a scoring system by Education Week.

Massachusetts received a score of 86.2, for a B grade, making it tops in the nation.

That edged out New Jersey's 85.5 and Maryland's 85.2 rating.

Vermont was ranked fourth in the nation, New Hampshire was fifth and Connecticut was sixth on the 24/7 Wall St. list.

Mississippi has the worst school systems in the country, according to the report, with a state score of 64.2.

"Strong performance among young state residents clearly led to further success, as more than 70% of 18 to 24 year olds were either enrolled in college or had already completed a post-secondary degree, the highest proportion in the nation," 24/7 Wall Street writes about Massachusetts.

"As in other states with strong schools, Massachusetts residents are financially well-off. Nearly 70% of children lived in families with incomes at least 200% of the poverty level, the fourth highest proportion in the country."
