Former WBZ Anchor Among Potential Jurors Called In Boston Marathon Bombing Trial
BOSTON (CBS) – It was a typical Tuesday night for former WBZ-TV anchor Ted Wayman - work and then a Bruins game.
But last week was a first for this seasoned news man.
"I don't think I've ever seen a bigger media circus out front of federal court. And I've covered a lot of them," Wayman said.
The former news anchor was one of hundreds who got the call to come to Federal Court for jury duty, showing up with no other information.
Then he saw Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev at the front of the courtroom.
"All of a sudden they bring the defendant in all 200 eye balls are staring at him. All of a sudden we realized this was the case," Wayman explained.
Wayman, who has covered everything from the OJ Simpson trial to the September 11 attacks, was staring at one of the most notorious defendants in U.S. history.
"He was quite indifferent. He couldn't care less 200 people, he didn't listen to the judge. Just sat there was indifferent to the whole process," Wayman recalled.
Wayman was asked how much did he follow the case, if he knew anything about Tsarnaev, questions he called respectful and insightful.
"I think a lot of people were sitting around looking around. This is a big case, this is a historic case," he said.
The Boston Marathon bombing case is a historic one that feels very personal for Boston residents, leaving many to wonder how a local feels about staying impartial.
Could Wayman have impartially sat on the jury?
"Had I been picked I would have tried my best," he said.
