NO Big Storms In Sight!

jan6BLAMECANADA

The wicked cold weather continues in Canada. It is relentless for those folks and I can't imagine what it's like to live in those conditions so much of the winter. As cold as it is here tonight, we should count our blessings because we can look forward to breaks from the harsh cold. The lowest temperatures in almost 4 years occurred in many places last Thursday morning. Boston's 1 below zero was the lowest since January 24, 2011 at -2. We were very lucky that the arctic air mass moderated rapidly aloft during the day enabling the temperature to spike up to 16-20. It could have struggled to reach 10. The air aloft is much warmer this time around despite some subzero temperatures in the lowlands overnight tonight. It should quickly warm 20-30 degrees on Sunday to yield highs near or just under 32.

2014_500MBOne year ago this week from January 11-14, Boston's high temperatures were 59, 54, 51 and 50 respectively! That will definitely not happen in the next 4 days but a potential shift in the steering currents should eventually propel milder air from west to east across the country arriving locally next weekend into the following week as the arctic chill is blocked off in Canada. Yet statistics reveal that the daily mean temperatures of the year are the lowest from January 20-24. Signals are flashing that the pattern will cycle the other way again and arctic air will once again surge into portions of the nation the last week or so of this month with an extension into February. Global factors in play plus those about to go into play are still aligned to produce a tough month of February.

jan6FRIMAPIt has been a very disappointing season so far for snow lovers and especially for those that depend upon snow removal for making a living. It is perplexing that it has been so snow-free which is in contrast to our predicted 55-65" for the Boston area. While the amounts have been meager to this point, the next chapter of the winter may be quite different with a twist in the plot. We shall see. In the meantime, another weak system is going to tease the region on Monday. The temperatures may be on the threshold for delivering snow and rain. I would expect near and south of the MA Pike, more rain will be the case while snow is dominant across the northern part of the state into northern New England. There is an absence of a rich moisture supply so small amounts of precipitation are anticipated.

2013_PATRIOTS_GAMEDAY2CONGRATULATIONS to the Patriots for a thrilling win over the Ravens. How SWEEEEET it is! Now all eyes are focused on the AFC Championship Game next Sunday evening at Gillette Stadium. Presently, the early outlook is for much milder conditions for this game in contrast to today's bone-chilling weather. After a couple of cold shots during the week on Tuesday and Friday, milder air should flow in later next Saturday and especially on Sunday. It could be up to 45-50 next Sunday afternoon with a 6:40pm kickoff temperature closer to 40 with 34 projected in the 4th quarter around 9-10pm. That game will be seen on WBZ-TV! Right now, fair weather is foreseen but it is a week away so the confidence is not high on this scenario just yet.

You can watch Pamela Garner's weathercasts on WBZ News 5-9am Sunday and I shall return for the late day shows. Enjoy the rest of the weekend!
