Boston Events To Honor Victims Of French Attacks

BOSTON (CBS) – A pair of weekend events have been scheduled in Boston to honor the victims of the deadly attacks in France earlier this week.

The Consulate General of France in Boston, the Association Démocratique des Français à l'Etrange (ADFE) and other local French associations are holding a rally in support of Charlie Hebdo.

Sunday's event is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. at the Parkman Bandstand on Boston Common.

"This public gathering will be the opportunity for the French, Francophone community, and their friends to join together in support of the victims of the terrorist attacks in Paris and the freedom of speech," a post on the Consulate General of France in Boston Facebook page said.

On Saturday, the French Cultural Center held a gathering of its own to celebrate the work of Charlie Hebdo journalists and cartoonists.

"We wanted really to offer a safe space to for our communities to be together and celebrate the lives lost and also remember the values we share and that we continue to uphold together," Catheline van den Branden, president of the French Cultural Center told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Kim Tunnicliffe.

On Wednesday in France 12 people were killed when gunmen entered the office of the Charlie Hebdo, a satirical magazine, and opened fire. Hostages were also killed on Friday as authorities surrounded the suspects.
