Reilly Smith: Bruins Definitely Keeping Eyes On Playoff Standings

Reilly Smith of the Boston Bruins called in to The Sports Hub on the morning of New Year's Eve to talk with Ryan Johnston and Joe Haggerty.

With the Bruins on the outside looking in on the playoff picture, the winger admitted that he does keep an eye on the standings.

"Yeah, and if someone's saying that they're not looking at it, they're probably lying to you," Smith said. "Because games are so crucial, whether it's at the start of the season or the middle of the season, two points is two points. You can slide up pretty quick, and you can slide out of a playoff spot overnight. It's something we're looking at every day, maybe three or four times a day."

Smith's normal linemate, Patrice Bergeron, missed Monday's game against the Red Wings. Smith was asked if it he felt like he was cheating on Bergeron.

"No, I don't think I was cheating on Bergy too much," Smith laughed. "[Krejci] is a really talented player. It's amazing how well he sees the ice and how well he's able to create plays. He's more of an east-west centerman, Bergy's more of a north-south guy, so it's a little different. But they're both extremely talented and it's a treat to play with either one."

Given that he becomes eligible for a contract extension once the new year begins, Smith was asked if he expects to sign soon. He said nothing is pressing, but added, "Boston is a great city, it's a great place to play, and if I had the opportunity to sign an extension here, it'd definitely be something I'd be interested in."

Smith was then asked about his unfortunate Christmas present:

"I may have parked my car in a resident parking spot over Christmas," Smith admitted.

The turn to Twitter prompted a question about how he feels about the social media network. Smith revealed an interesting Twitter tidbit.

"As a player who was traded and actually found out [about the trade] on Twitter, I'm always cognizant of it now," Smith said when asked about the thought process prior to the trade deadline.
