Keller @ Large: Best Moments In Life Don't Live Online
BOSTON (CBS) - The geniuses at Facebook are once again issuing a public apology for an intrusive, tone-deaf gaffe.
This time, it's a "Year in Review" feature that takes all the stuff you posted during the year and spits it back to you in a form of "this is your life" travelogue, whether you wanted it or not.
Turns out many did not want it. Something tells me the millionaire whiz kids out there in Happy Valley still don't quite grasp the concept of privacy.
But I do think Facebook is on to something.
Their idea of the highlights of the year gone by is a lot closer to my own than the endless stream of year in review babble you get from the mainstream media.
When I think of my own personal top ten stories of the past year, events that moved me and stand out from the daily stream of consciousness, only two of them are actual news events.
Interviewing people in the street on the anniversary of the Boston Marathon murders was memorable for the emotions of the folks I spoke with, their determination not to let criminals define our city. And the passing of former Mayor Tom Menino provoked an unforgettable mix of gratitude for what he did and personal remorse over his loss.
But the rest of my list involve friends and family: the passing of an old college buddy, and reconnecting with a long-lost high-school pal; a birthday celebration for my wife, a trip abroad with friends, time spent with my sons and daughter-in-law, an experiment on the grill that turned out especially well, and one spectacular summer–evening swim with Buddy the Lab.
News events, sports events, pop culture stuff, they're all interesting enough. But for me, the best moments in life don't live online.
And sorry, Mark Zuckerberg, but I bet a lot of us feel the same way.
