Dennis Man Charged Following Fatal Yarmouth Crash
YARMOUTH (CBS) – A Dennis man faces motor vehicle manslaughter charges after a car crashed into a boulder, flew through the air and came to a stop suspended on a tree in Yarmouth.
Yarmouth police arrested James Rebello III, 33, and charged him with manslaughter by motor vehicle, speeding, failure to stop, failure to stay within marked lanes, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
The arrest came after police and firefighters responded to Blue Rock Road in South Yarmouth just before 1:30 a.m. on Saturday and found an Audi that was suspended in a tree.
First responders found Steven Berrio, 28, of Harwich, on the ground in front of the vehicle after he was ejected during the crash. Rebello was trapped in the driver's seat and was extricated by firefighters using the jaws of life.
Firefighters attempted to revive Berrio, the owner of the Audi, at the scene. He was transported to Cape Cod Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Yarmouth police said they found alcoholic beverages inside the car, and after speaking with Robello determined that he was drunk.
Initial investigation indicates that the car was traveling at what police called an "extremely high rate of speed" on North Main Street.
When the car approached a traffic island near Great Western Road, it veered to the left, according to police. The Audi then clipped the curb on the traffic island, crossed Great Western Road, and hit a large boulder in the front yard of a home on Blue Rock Road.
The impact of the crash was so severe that it moved the boulder and also sent the vehicle airborne before it came to a stop on a pine tree, police said.
