Mass. To Install Energy-Efficient Streetlights

BOSTON (AP) — The streetlights on some state roadways are going green.

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation says it plans to replace about one-third of its streetlight fixtures around the state with more efficient light emitting diode (LED) lighting.

The agency says the initiative is part of Gov. Deval Patrick's commitment to reducing electricity consumption and energy costs, and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The first phase of the project calls for retrofitting nearly 2,000 streetlight fixtures, and will include the rewiring of poles when necessary.

The initial phase will cost $2.2 million, with the agency leveraging $370,000 in incentives from Northeast Utilities and National Grid.
