Unseasonably Warm Christmas

BOSTON (CBS) -- Sixty degrees this Christmas?! I know, I know. It just doesn't seem right, does it? Our average high is 38 degrees for December 25 in Boston…this year, it's going to feel more like mid-October!

Snow lovers aside, I'm finding that this is the one time of year that everyone is actually hoping for flakes instead of drops. A change to snow ain't happening this time around. Our storm is coming in pieces though so expect periods of showers, light rain and drizzle today, tonight and tomorrow morning followed by some heavier elements of rain tomorrow evening and night.  Wet weather will linger into Christmas morning before wrapping up from west to east during the late morning for most of us. Rainfall totals from this event will generally fall between the 1-2" range, pushing us into the top 10 wettest Decembers at Logan Airport.

Flooding won't be a big concern because the storm is so drawn out, but there will likely be some poor drainage flooding, reduced visibility, big puddles and localized urban flooding at times – so use caution as you get the last minute stuff done and head to your holiday destination.

The persistent onshore wind combined with astronomical high tides will result in pockets of minor coastal flooding and splashover during the midday high tide cycles in eastern MA today and tomorrow.

In terms of wind…the onshore wind will turn southerly tomorrow afternoon and ramp up during the evening; expect numerous gusts between 25-35 mph with gusts between 40-50 mph on the Cape/Islands. Behind the front, the wind shifts around to the west and stays strong through Christmas afternoon. While I'm not anticipating any widespread damage, a few isolated outages may result.

Sunshine and a subsiding wind will greet us on Friday with a fairly mild start to the weekend - highs will be in the low 50s on Saturday.

A big thank you to our newest meteorologist, Pamela Gardner, for filling in for me these next few days so I can enjoy some time with family and friends. I'll see you again on Monday morning!

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas filled with laughter, love and peace.
