Monday Expected To Be Busiest Day Of The Year At Post Offices

BOSTON (CBS) -- If you haven't sent out your cards and packages yet, you're not alone.

Monday is expected to be the busiest day of the year at post offices around the country.

"Today we expect that we will handle 640 million cards, letters and packages," Christine Dugas, spokeswoman for the United States Postal Service, told WBZ NewsRadio 1030. "Typically two Mondays before Christmas we do see quite a peak in things that are processed and sent through the mail."

The postal service said that anyone who hasn't sent out their gifts yet shouldn't panic, but should get moving.

"We did open select post offices for three Sundays in a row," Dugas said. "We are also out delivering packages on Sunday."

Priority mail is one option as Dec. 25 approaches, and packages can be mailed via priority mail express on Dec. 23 and still arrive before Christmas Day for many destinations, according to the postal service.
