Keller @ Large: We Need More People Who've Been Humbled

BOSTON (CBS) - Whoops!

It looks like Facebook, the seemingly-harmless online time-wasting service that has the proven capacity to snuff out careers in the time it takes to hit the "send" button, has claimed another hapless victim.

A congressional aide – communications director, no less, for a GOP congressman from Tennessee – has resigned after several days of backlash for a Facebook posting critical of President Obama's daughters for their behavior at last Wednesday's annual presidential turkey pardoning.

Perhaps you saw video of the event, in which 13-year-old Sasha Obama and her 16-year-old sister Malia couldn't quite conceal their boredom and embarrassment as their father cracked a series of lame jokes, culminating in Malia's response when the president asked her if she'd like to pet the pardoned turkey.

"Nah," she replied.

This was enough to prompt the congressional aide, in what she now admits was a grotesque overreaction, to admonish the Obama girls to "try showing a little class.... Act like being in the White House matters to you. Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at the bar. And certainly don't make faces during televised, public events."

I'm with the Obama girls on this one, on every count.

If there were some sort of track record of these young ladies disrespecting their surroundings, that would be one thing, but there isn't. Their attire seemed perfectly appropriate for teenage girls to me.

And if you've ever been around a live turkey, making a face at the prospect of touching it is a totally understandable reaction.

But I don't think the aide should lose her job over this.

On the contrary, we need more people in Washington who've been humbled, learned their lesson, and can share it with others.

Not fewer.
