Brockton Pedestrian Deaths Reach 8 In 2014
BROCKTON (CBS) - A man was struck and killed by an SUV in Brockton early Monday morning, the eighth pedestrian killed in the city this year, according to the mayor.
Police say the 61-year-old was trying to cross Route 27 around 6:25 a.m. when he was hit head-on by the vehicle.
The driver stopped immediately.
CPR was performed on the man and he was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital, where police said he died.
There have been no charges at this point in the investigation.
According to WBZ-TV's Bill Shields, the victim was going to work when he was hit. His lunchbox and shoes were still in the road, hours after the crash, as police reconstructed the incident.
A witness told WBZ she and her fiance stopped their car to let the man cross, but the driver of the SUV apparently didn't see the man and hit him.
The impact collapsed the hood on the SUV. The driver was with his family when the accident happened.
Later in the morning, state police tested the brakes on the SUV and they appeared to be working fine.
No names have been released.
Mayor Bill Carpenter told Shields this is the eighth pedestrian killed in Brockton this year. In six of those deaths, Carpenter said the pedestrian was using a device before they were hit.
Last month, Carpenter launched a campaign to promote awareness among pedestrians and drivers.
He called it the three E's – education, engineering and enforcement.
