Group Of Red Sox Owners Reportedly Purchasing PawSox

BOSTON (CBS) -- The ownership group of the Boston Red Sox are stretching their reach to the minor leagues.

Part of the Red Sox ownership group will purchase the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox, according to The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo. It's unclear which members of the Boston ownership are part of the purchase, and no sale price has been reported.

The PawSox, who play at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I., have served as one of Boston's minor league affiliates since 1970. They became Boston's Triple A team in 1977 when Ben Mondor purchased the team, and have flourished ever since. Not only do they provide the big league club with an easy avenue to and from the minors (especially convenient for those quick rehab assignments for big leaguers), but they have also been on of the most fan-friendly minor league teams in the country. They are often near the top of the minor leagues in terms of yearly attendance.

Pawtucket has won four minor league titles in their existence: 1973, 1984, 2012 and 2014.

Pawtucket president Mike Tamburro did not have a comment on the proposed sale. Cafardo also reached out to several Boston executives for comment, including team president and CEO Larry Lucchino and executive vice president and COO Sam Kennedy, but all declined.
