Boston School Worker, 85, Charged With Indecently Assaulting Student

BOSTON (CBS) -- An 85-year-old Boston Public Schools employee has been arrested and charged with indecently assaulting a student, Boston police said Friday.

Police responded to a report of an indecent assault involving a student and employee on the afternoon of Nov. 13 at the Higginson/Lewis School in Roxbury.

A spokesman for Boston Public Schools said at the time that a staff member reported seeing the worker interacting with a student in a way that made them uncomfortable.

After an investigation by the sex assault unit, police arrested Charles Ramsey, of Boston, on Friday and charged him with indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 years of age.

Ramsey has resigned from his school position and is expected to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court on Monday, according to police.

Principal Joy Salesman-Oliver informed parents of the investigation through a robocall last week.

"Obviously, we take this incredibly seriously," Salesman-Oliver said. "We will always act quickly to protect students."

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh called the incident "completely unacceptable."

"There is absolutely nothing more important to me than the safety and well-being of our children," he said in a statement. "Any incident in our schools is distressing, but this is particularly upsetting and I have been stunned and deeply disturbed by these allegations."

Earlier this month, a teacher at another Boston school was accused of indecently assaulting a child at Boston Medical Center.

"Both cases are extraordinarily difficult and distressing and our full focus is on supporting the families who may be involved," said interim Superintendent John McDonough in a robocall to parents Friday. "The individual arrested today had passed several background checks, like all employees, first upon hire and then at regular intervals during his employment."
