Mashpee Teen Seeks Owner Of Marine Corps Ring

MASHPEE (CBS) -- Nate LaRiviere, 14, may have been the perfect person to make a discovery in a cemetery off Lakewood Avenue in Mashpee.

The high school freshman was in the cemetery to do some artwork. He caught a glimmer of something in the leaves and half-way in the mud. After he cleaned it off, he realized it was a Marine Corps ring.

"If I had lost it, I would want it back. I would assume it would bring back many memories. If it was a family member who lost it or loved one, it's got to mean something," said LaRiviere.

A local veterans group said military rings are often left on gravestones, but LaRiviere found the ring not near any headstone and in the mud.

"Being part of the Young Marines that means something for me," said LaRiviere.

The teen belongs to the Young Marines and his goal is to follow in his family's military footsteps. His father was Air Force. His sister is in the Navy and his brother serves the Marines.

LaRiviere's mother posted photos and information online, but no one has come forward yet.

"I think everything happens for a reason. I think it's a good lesson – try to pay it forward," said Katie McGee, his mother.
