State To Make Route 6 Safer After Fatal Crash In Sandwich
CENTERVILLE (CBS) - Lawrence "Larry" Barros died in a violent, head-on collision on Route 6 Tuesday.
"I'm still trying to absorb everything. It's like learning how to live all over again without my husband," said Barros' widow, Monica.
Barros, 32, was traveling eastbound on Rt. 6 at exit 4 in Sandwich. A pickup truck traveling westbound crossed the median and hit Barros' Honda Accord.
MassDOT clear-cut this section of the highway several months ago. There are no guardrails, no trees and no vegetation in the median.
On Wednesday, transportation officials told WBZ the Barros family tragedy had changed immediate plans.
"Money initially allotted for thinning and clearing of vegetation throughout the project limits will be reallocated to install additional segments of guardrail within the project limits, which is approximately eight and a half miles from the canal to the Sandwich-Barnstable line," said MassDOT spokesperson, Michael Verseckes.
Barros was a father of two young boys.
"I love my husband," Monica says, "And I wish I had told him one more time."
No charges have been filed against the driver of the pickup truck.
Barros was the sole provider for his family, and ironically, in his role with the Department of Transitional Assistance, he often worked with other families who found themselves in the very situation his widow now finds herself in.
