Keller @ Large: 'Tips' For Driving In The Snow

BOSTON (CBS) - This is it, the first snow of the season! And for those of you who may be new to our little Garden of Eden, that means it's time for my annual guide to driving in snow, Boston-style.

First of all, out-of-towners, you need to understand that we rarely get snow around here. It is such an unusual occurrence that mass panic - and the abandonment of all traces of courtesy and common sense – are to be expected.

The weather people all agreed Friday's event would amount to little more than a coating to a couple of inches, but what do they know? One man's coating is another's Blizzard of '78.

In a crisis weather event like this, you've got to look out for number one, which is why so many other drivers are signaling that number.

So here are some basic tips on how to navigate horrendous situations like the one we're currently enduring:

1)   When driving in snow, you must go as fast as you can at all times. That may seem counterintuitive, with the slippery roads and all, but they'll only get more slippery the longer you're out there. If you step on the gas, there's less chance of the snow piling up on your car and, ultimately, turning you into a moving snowdrift. See the appreciation other drivers are showing you as you tailgate or accelerate past them? They all think you're number one!

2)   If you come out to find snow covering your windshield, don't take the time to clear it all off, remember Rule #1! Just clear a doughnut-sized hole to peer out of, like everyone else.

3) And finally, rule #3: there's no need to learn how to drive in the snow. We probably won't see anymore of it until March, if then.
