Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor Amputates Leg
KATY, Texas (AP) — A Houston-area woman injured in the deadly Boston Marathon bombing was recovering Tuesday after surgery to amputate part of her left leg.
Rebekah DiMartino was listed in good condition at Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital near Houston, said Lindsey Klingensmith, a hospital spokeswoman.
DiMartino, 27, had surgery Monday to remove her left leg below the knee.
The procedure was necessary to relieve pain, said Dr. William McGarvey, DiMartino's orthopedic surgeon. The operation was a success and DiMartino, who had more than a dozen prior surgeries, was doing well, the physician said.
"She's talking of the next steps. She's an inspiration to us all," McGarvey told the Boston Herald on Monday night.
DiMartino held a "Left Leg Last Hurrah" dinner over the weekend, The Boston Globe reported.
Rebekah Gregory was watching the April 2013 Boston Marathon when bombs exploded. Her now-7-year-old son and her boyfriend, Peter DiMartino, were also hurt, but the woman had the most serious injuries. She used a wheelchair, crutches and a leg brace during her recovery.
The couple wed last spring in Asheville, North Carolina.
The bombing suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, has pleaded not guilty and awaits trial in January, prosecutors said. His older brother, Tamerlan, was killed in a shootout with police after the bombing that killed three people and injured more than 260.
