Springfield Prisoner Escapes From Second Floor Of Rehab Center

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Police are searching for a prisoner who jumped from the second-floor window of a rehabilitation center in Springfield and fled from custody.

Hampden Country Sheriff's Department spokesman Stephen O'Neil said on Saturday that Abimel Roman, of Springfield, was serving time for burglary and receiving stolen property.

A roommate reported that the 35-year-old Roman escaped from the Western Massachusetts Correctional Alcohol Center at 7 p.m. Saturday. The minimum-security facility in downtown Springfield provides alcohol and drug treatment to prisoners who are not considered a danger to the community.

State and local police are searching to Roman, who was originally scheduled to be released in May.

Authorities describe Roman as 5-foot-11 tall, weighing 179 pounds and having black hair and brown eyes.

Roman will face additional charges related to escaping from a correctional facility.
