Lowell Police Deem Sexual Assault Report False

LOWELL (CBS) -- A sexual assault report made by a teenager in Lowell has been determined to be false, Lowell police said Thursday.

On Wednesday, authorities said they were looking for a man in his 50s who attacked a teenage girl as she walked down Lincoln Street, forcing her into the woods. The girl told police she ran to a local garage, where mechanics called police.

Police said residents now have no reason to be concerned about an offender in their neighborhood. They're also considering filing charges related to the false report.

"The investigation has determined that the incident as reported by the victim did not occur," police said in a statement. "The Lowell Police Department considers the alleged sexual assault case closed and we are not looking for any suspects."
