Flight Makes Emergency Landing At Logan For Toddler In Cardiac Arrest
BOSTON (CBS) - A JetBlue pilot was forced to make an emergency landing at Logan Airport after a toddler went into cardiac arrest.
It happened on JetBlue flight 1786 around 5:30pm Thursday.
"Many passengers who really were concerned about the baby's well-being," said Massachusetts State Police Trooper John Morris.
WBZ-TV's Paul Burton spokes with Bayley Irish, one of the passengers on the plane.
"Everyone was very nervous," Irish said. "When she said medical emergency, I immediately became very panicky."
Irish captured the scene on her cellphone. She said a doctor on board ran to the back of the plane and performed CPR.
"I'm praying for him but I'm also praying for his parents because they looked terrified," she said.
Trooper Morris was one of the first responders to the scene, along with Massport emergency crews.
Authorities say the flight was en route from Pittsburgh to Boston when the pilot radioed in. A 2-year-old Needham boy was in cardiac arrest and in critical condition.
Trooper Morris says a Pennsylvania doctor on board played a critical role.
"There was a doctor on board the flight and he responded and he performed medical attention to the child that was very helpful with his survival," said Morris.
The child was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital. He wasn't conscious, but did have a pulse.
The child's mother, father and older brother were also on the flight .
"I don't think any parent that saw something like that wouldn't put themselves in the shoes of those parents. It was very emotional," said Morris.
